I would like to thank friends, family and clients from 2010 for an amazing year and can not wait to tell you what 2011 has coming, it is going to be an amazing year!!!
Here we are again folks with the second installment in the vendor spotlight theme. It gives me great pleasure to present today Dorothy Creaven of Makeup Ireland. I have known Dorothy for just over 3 years now and we actually met for the first time when she was doing the makeup of a bride whilst I was there to shoot the wedding. Doesn’t times fly when you are having fun!!!
1) Tell us a little about yourself
Well, I’m an electronic engineer turned makeup-artist who specialises in film/television, fashion shoots, editorial and bridal makeup. I love almost everything to do with music – play piano and currently learning the double bass. I also spent a couple of years in South America working, living and learning Spanish. Big animal lover, especially basset hounds… it’s their long ears that do it for me!
2) What made you decide that being a makeup artist (MUA) was for you??
I was always fascinated by makeup ever since I was a child – I was amazed at how you could ‘decorate’ your face and loved watching my mother put on her lipstick. When I got older, it progressed into seeing how makeup can help bring out the features that you want to focus on… and help hide the ones that you don’t! I still find fascinating the subtle differences makeup can make and just love people’s reactions when they look in the mirror after I’m done, smile, and say, “Wow, I love how I look.”
3) Do you use/have a favourite brand?? If so, why??
Bobbi Brown is my current favourite at the moment – they produce such high quality products, last for ages, are reasonably priced, elegant packaging and best of all, are not tested on animals. The perfect brand.
4) What do you find is the most common mistake women make when applying makeup??
I find that a lot of the time, women are using the wrong shade and type of foundation for their skins. It’s not just important to get the colour absolutely right (steering away from the dreaded orange look, of course!) but we need to think about what the skin needs as a whole. A tinted moisturiser will work great on flawless, younger skin, for example, but a more mature skin will need a cream foundation which is much more hydrating.
5) Why is it important for someone to use a MUA instead of doing it themselves or getting a friend to do it for them??
Makeup artists are experts in their field and learn specific techniques that are picked up through time and experience. There are many things to consider so unless you’re a makeup artist, you might not tend to think about them. We take into account specific lighting conditions, weather conditions, camouflage, and simply making the makeup last for as long as you do… such a necessity but can be tricky to achieve unless you know how!
6) What was your most unusual request??
It has to be when I was working on ‘The Tudors’ Season IV – it was for a huge battle scene and each actor had to have a major wound, scar or skin-tear as well as copious amounts of blood just thrown at them and all over them. Not for the faint-hearted but a lot of fun!
7) What is your favourite or perhaps the most exciting aspect of your job??
I just love meeting all different people, each job is totally different from the last… I could be working on a film set one day, another day helping Hollywood actors prepare for a film premiere or creating a specific look for a bride-to-be. I love how varied my days are and to see people’s reaction when I’ve done my job and are happy with my work.
What aspires you??
When I see makeup artists like Alex Box who create masterpieces with makeup – an artist in the truest sense of the word. Makeup is so much more about making people look pretty – it’s another medium for artistic expression and I would love to have more opportunities to create more dramatic and abstract art with makeup in the future… so watch this space!
9) What tips or advice would you give to someone wanting to become a makeup artist??
Try and get as much on-the-job training as possible after you do your initial course – offer to work for free and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Also, think outside the box a little – don’t forget that one product can be used in many ways so feel free to experiment as much as possible. Study fashion shoots in magazines like Vogue to see how different artists work and also keep an eye on trends… fashion & makeup is a fast moving industry so you have to be ready for it!

I was asked a little while back by the organisers would I be interested in taking pictures of the concert to help celebrate the memory of Manuela Riedo. A massive and special mention must also go out to the organiser of the show, Shane Lennon. The support from the artists involved and for those who came along to enjoy the evenings entertainment was a testament to your hard work – well done!!!
Also, due to the amount of images I wanted to share, I am actually going to split the event into two posts so that it allows you to appreciate the evenings efforts. So without any further delay, I present a selection of images taken on the night for you to enjoy

Arlette and Hans Peter (Manuela’s parents) in the foreground leading everyone to the beach.
We all headed back inside into the Salthill Hotel where we started the nights entertainment.
The first act were the brilliant Trad on the Prom. If you have never seen any of their shows then you MUST go and see them when they resume in the summer.
We then had the amazing Gerard Fahy who gave us a couple of tunes using the Uileann Pipes.
After the Trad on the Prom guys had finished we had Justin Kelly belt some great tunes.
Justin then provided the backing music and vocals to the super talented Lucia Evans.
The next act up were Ruth & Bernie from The Molly Hicks
A little while after they were joined on stage by the talented Mary McPartlan for a few songs

I came across this by accident in a recent web search and like most people and initially I had sceptical thoughts on this especially when you see pictures in the tabloids. I used to think it was an invasion of privacy but more along the lines of respecting the days memories as opposed to putting someones picture in print/web etc. It also got me thinking what would the people at the funeral think or say to having someone there snapping away.
I think about me doing what I do as a wedding photographer and how I capture the memories of a day for the bride and groom especially as it goes so fast. How they look back on the day and (hopefully) have a chuckle to themselves at the images captured as they are seeing their day from another perspective.
However, the more I thought about it, it got me thinking back to the time when I buried my mom a little while back. Would I have liked to have someone there taking pictures on the day?? Would I have appreciated the day captured in pictures?? Well, to be honest I would say yes!! I have a bad memory anyway but that day was a blur and I can not for the life of me remember who was or wasn’t there. We generally speak about a funeral being a day of celebration, especially here in Ireland where it really can bring friends and family together.

What are your thoughts???
It is with great pleasure to introduce the first of many vendor spotlights showcasing people that I know, have worked with and want to share with the outside world. Oh, what do you guys think to the logo, funky hey?? A special thanks must go to Allan Cavanagh of Caricatures Ireland for the drawing which is incorporated within the logo.
For the first interview, we are going to be talking to Annie Byrne of Aislinn Events down in Dingle. Annie is a wedding co-ordinator who specialises in helping brides who are looking to have their special day here in Ireland. So make sure you are sitting down, have a cup of your favourite to hand and we shall begin…
1) What made you decide that being a wedding planner was for you??
There was never really an ‘aha’ moment, it was always just there in my mind. When I was younger I used to throw great parties and always loved to create a theme for them so being a wedding planner was a natural progression from that I suppose. I love weddings because they are about love, bringing family and friends together, good food and drink, fun and all things beautiful. It was an easy decision.
2) Why locate to Ireland??
I came to Ireland in 1995 when I took 2 months off of work in Los Angeles to backpack around Europe. My travels brought me to Dingle and I fell in love with the place. It’s a stunningly beautiful place and the people were fantastic to me so I came back the next year to work and have been here ever since.
3) How did you decide on the company/business name, what was the inspiration behind it? Great question??
I wanted a name for my business that had Irish connotations and meant something relevant to weddings and events but with practicalities like being easy to pronounce for my American couples and beginning with an A so I would get top listing in directories {one has to think about those things!}. I also had a nickname for the group of my favourite suppliers whom I called ‘The Dream Team’. Aislinn is taken from the word {and girls name} Aisling which means dream or inspired vision. It was perfect.
4) Have you come across any misconceptions associated with hiring a wedding planner??
So many! The main one I think is that having a wedding planner is pretentious. It’s not. Having a wedding planner is so practical it’s ridiculous. Also that we will either take over the wedding or cost a fortune. We will not and do not. We are there to advise and guide and do the little bits that you either don’t want to do or don’t have time for. The cost of a planner (especially for a full planning) should be built into your budget so that whether you are spending (the national average) of €20,000 for your wedding you will get a planner and still spend the €20,000. She will negotiate for you and source items to fit within your budget.
5) What makes you different against all the other wedding planners in Ireland??
I don’t want to speak for other planners but I know that I care, I’m personal and conscientious and will do everything I can for them. Also being American myself and specializing in Ireland as a destination, I know what (especially) Americans expect and are used to in a wedding which is quite different than a typical Irish wedding and do keep a close eye on what is happing in America with new ideas, trends and coming up with my own new ideas to personalize the day.
6) What’s a favourite wedding planning moment??
In general, when the couple leaves me. That sounds bad! But what I mean is hearing how happy they were with everything and knowing their experience was a life moment and that I was a part of it. Also planning little surprises for people like one of my grooms who asked me to organize a gospel choir for his bride and she had no idea. Imagine trying to sneak a gospel choir into a church!
7) What do you enjoy about your job??
Mainly the creativity of it but I also know that I am a service person so being able to simply help people, advise with something they have never done before is really rewarding.
8) What is your most unusual or regular request you get from couple when they come to Ireland to get married?
I don’t know if you would call it unusual, but organizing full travel itineraries for a wedding party is something that normally wouldn’t be in my job description but of course I’ll do it to help! Regular requests are not only organizing the wedding day but pre and post wedding parties that are ‘typically Irish’. They want pubs, traditional music and to meet the ole characters that they imagine when they think of Ireland. That is fun as long as I can attend too!
9) What would your dream event be if you had 100% control of everything??
A wedding definitely. With a bride that wasn’t afraid to throw out all the “wedding rules” and just do what she wanted. A smallish wedding of 35 to 50 people and hire out a private manor house or castle for 3 days. Have all of the food for the weekend organized by a chef with nice picnic type items for lounging around the day before and dining family style on the first evening. Then the wedding day, have the ceremony outside with the event fully catered for in the castle or manor. In the evening, great food and drink with great friends and some music. The next morning a late brunch together and relaxing in the gardens all day. – I’m a simple girl!

Quite a while back I decided I wanted to try and make my blog a little more interesting and not necessarily all about me me me (even though we all know it is hahahaha). I had seen lots of different takes on this so I thought I would try and put something together that would appeal to the masses.
Even thought I predominately work within the wedding industry I also wanted to try and cover other areas that I think would be of interest to everyone which in turn will make it a bit interesting. I am also hoping that by doing these short interviews it will give a little more insight into the person themselves and get to know a little more about them.
The first interview will start this week and it is a very apt one considering the recent blog post I did about Shannon and Mike’s wedding here in Ireland.
